I had a blast going through this interactive map. As a lifelong Chicago resident, many of the locations in the Blues Brothers movie are quite familiar, but in a hazy “where is that?” sort of way. A bad week for the blues, first Li’l Arthur takes ill and now the news that rising blues guitarist Sean Costello has been found dead at the age of 29. Details as provided by his record label are linked here below.

Harmonica veteran Li'l Arthur Duncan hospitalized
Li’l Arthur Duncan, veteran harpist and a Delmark records artist, was hospitalized last week for brain surgery. Doctors at the University of Illinois medical center reportedly removed a tumor from his brain, which one member of his band described as “the size of a golfball”. Duncan is in intensive care and has reportedly not moved beyond blinking his eyes, and his condition is not yet stable.
Duncan is a beloved member of the Chicago blues scene, and recently his career was on the upswing with a new Delmark CD/DVD release, “Live at Rosa’s Lounge”, recorded last August. He was proprietor of several West Side blues lounges over the years, but in recent years lived on Chicago’s South Side has spent more time playing with his band, the Backscratchers.

Belding Elementary School Poetry: Writing the Blues
Chicago schoolkids were introduced to Langston Hughes via a program conducted by the Poetry Center of Chicago. This article includes some of the students’ attempts at “blues poetry”. While some of them are what you’d expect from kids this age, others show a surprising depth for elementary school level, and it’s terrific to know that kids are being exposed to blues culture and literature at so young an age.
